Growing Up
I think I realized this a long time ago, but tonight it has really sunk in: sometimes part of growing up is realizing that you just don't matter in the grand scheme of things; even to the people that you thought you would always "matter" to.

So.... How's Married Life???
I've seen a lot of people lately that I haven't seen for a while. The first thing out of their mouths is, "So..... how's married life???" It's hard to believe that it's almost been a full year, but at the same time it feels like it's been way longer than that.
Marriage is good. I actually find it easier than dating and Matt actually says that he likes me more now that we're married. I feel content. I love being committed to the perfect person for me. I love our routines, I love the life we have created together, I love the friendships we have created with each other and with our group of friends. I trust him and he trusts me and there isn't a better feeling in the world than knowing that my heart is protected by him forever.
Last night we played ping pong, had a beer, ate dinner, then cleaned the upstairs part of our house together. I know that I am officially an old married lady because I had fun. Ha!

Friends in Adulthood
I really love that I am at a point in my life where I can choose my friends with care and I am even more thrilled that I no longer have to hang out with people just because I think it's the nice thing to do. I have never felt more comfortable with my social life and love that I have a group of friends that enjoy and respect each other's similarities and differences. Some of us drink. Some of us don't. We have different political beliefs. We have different backgrounds, different goals in life and different social and financial circumstances... But somehow, we all seem to get along, laugh with each other, travel together, confide in each other, etc.
Girlfriends are absolutely necessary in my opinion. Every girl needs someone to turn to in times of absolute triumph and defeat. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the blessing of friendships and I really feel sorry for people who don't feel like they fit anywhere.
I think if you find yourself repeatedly being let down by people or find yourself without friends now would be a good time to do some self reflection and ask yourself "Is it maybe me?" If you have failed in several "attempts" at friendship maybe it's time you realize that your sense or reality or your expectations are unrealistic.
One of the lines I use quite frequently opened my eyes up to this thought and helped me quite a bit, and although it is silly, I believe it to be very true.
"If while driving home, you encounter an asshole on the road... you encountered an asshole on the road. But if you encounted more than one asshole on the road, chances are you are the asshole."
One of the biggest lessons I have learned in "adulthood" is that we are all perfectly imperfect and being understanding, loving and down to earth are essential charachteristics to being a good person and a good friend.
